It is often difficult to find scripts that meet the needs of drama groups for
youth. These three plays do so in the following ways:
1. They are ensemble-style, providing opportunities for large casts (12-25
actors).
2. Most characters can be played by male or female actors, so gender is never a
problem.
3. The plays require no technical support and can be performed anywhere.
4. The plays are suitable for a family audience and for casts aged 12 to adult.
5. The plays offer opportunities for song writing and companies are also
encouraged to replace certain scenes with ones written by their own youth.
6. The plays explore a variety of theatre skills: clown, mime, movement, choral
speaking, narrative work, character development, singing, stage combat and
dance. Theatre groups can use the plays as teaching tools, and as a way of
showcasing the talents of particular youth.
7. The plays explore a variety of theatre styles, in particular Brecht's Epic
Theatre.
8. The plays use cultural and historical themes, offering opportunities for
cross-curricular study.
9. The plays are accompanied by workshop suggestions and educational materials,
for your use.
10. All plays are under one hour in length. Most have an episodic structure,
allowing for group work and multiple student directors in the classroom setting.
These plays have been performed in Canada and on tour in the UK, so you can
feel confident about choosing them. Original photos, reviews, songs and other
support material can be provided on request.
