Between 'The Rock'
and a Hard Place

About "Between the Rock and a Hard Place"

This is a play about the immigrant experience. A teenager travels through time and space to nineteenth century Ireland, where her ancestors struggle against famine and class discrimination. She follows their fortunes as they set out courageously for a fresh start in the New World.  As her journey continues she discovers for herself the expectations, joys and struggles of all immigrants, and by finding out more about her past, she grows to greater awareness of herself.  'Between the Rock and a Hard Place' should strike a chord with all immigrants, no matter where they come from. The play includes opportunities for singing, creative movement, comedy and ensemble acting. Actors take on a variety of roles, remaining on stage throughout. Directors are encouraged to replace the name of the central character's community with their own, to highlight the relevance of her experiences. The play's themes encourage a dialogue amongst young people about the experience of immigrants, and the importance of celebrating where we come from, if we are ever to truly know ourselves.
