About "Our Western Home"

Original poster of "Our Western Home", a play about Bernardo ChildrenBetween 1860 and 1930 more than 80,000 destitute children were uprooted from the streets of Britain's larger cities, and transplanted to Canada to work on pioneer farms. A lesser known episode in the history of our country, the story of the 'Home Children' is one of both redemption and sorrow. This play follows the tragic stories of three young people brought to Canada from Victorian England, and explores an attitude toward children that is very different from our own. Since more than 10% of Canadians trace their ancestry back to the Home Children, this story has relevance to all of us today. 'Our Western Home' can be staged by a cast as small as 12 and as large as 25, with most actors remaining on stage throughout and playing multiple characters. There are opportunities for singers, writers and songwriters if required. 'Our Western Home' asks questions about the way we treat one another, and examines how individuals can be caught up in, and often destroyed by, the tide of international events.
