In 1845 Sir John
Franklin set sail for Arctic waters in the hopes of discovering the elusive
North West Passage - the fabled short cut from Europe to the Orient. His
famous journey took him through treacherous, uncharted waters. He dreamed of
becoming a hero, and succeeding where countless other explorers had failed.
Instead, his ships simply disappeared. 'The Passage' explores one of the
greatest mysteries in the history of world exploration - what happened to
Franklin and his men? How could two manned ships simply disappear without a
trace? The story is told from the point of view of Franklin's young wife,
who worked tirelessly for more than a decade, in the hope of uncovering the
truth. Her search ended when she finally received proof of her husband's
death, and confirmation that he would go down in history as the first
explorer to discover a North West Passage. However, it was not until the
1980s that a Canadian academic finally solved the mystery of what happened
to Franklin's ships. A truly Canadian story, The Passage uses song, dance,
memorable characters and an ensemble theatre approach to explore one of the
greatest episodes in the history of Arctic exploration.
